“I know that was hard, babe, but you did great.” Vic squeezed her hand as they were heading home later that night.

“Honestly . . . I . . .” Colette stumbled over her words. She pressed the button to roll down the window, letting the air cool the warmth in her face before she continued. “I did fine until the end, when I was thinking about the miscarriage,” she said, her voice wobbling as she burst into tears. They had been trying to get pregnant again for six months, and it wasn’t working. When she had shared with her doctor that she had frozen eggs in storage, he had suggested that in vitro fertilization may be a great option for her. Though she didn’t want to go through the grueling process, she was starting to doubt this was going to happen naturally for her and Vic. Maybe she shouldn’t be a mother—perhaps, like her own mother, who’d had difficulty caring for her properly, infertility was a problem Colette was given to stop her from continuing the cycle.

Vic grabbed a napkin from the glove compartment and handed it to her. “We’re going to be fine.”

“I hope so . . . but . . .” She sobbed but then took a deep breath to calm herself, wiping her tears. “I think it’s time for me to use my frozen eggs. I’m sick of just hoping for happiness. I’m calling the doctor first thing in the morning.” If that didn’t work, maybe she really wasn’t meant to be a mother.
